The evil bigger than one detective
The Five Orange Pips brings a real terror society into the canon. The K.K.K. posts five dried orange pips as a death warrant to men who left it holding its secrets; each recipient dies within days, the verdicts reading accident. It is the canon at its darkest — a threat that reaches across the Atlantic and is not, in the end, defeated in the drawing room.
Chronology as a weapon
Holmes cracks the pattern from postmarks and death-dates: the intervals between warning and death match the sailing times of a ship, and one barque — the Lone Star — touched every relevant port on cue. He posts five pips of his own to the captain and names the vessel to the law. But the Atlantic executes the sentence first: only a shattered sternpost is ever found. Justice arrives, but not by Holmes's hand.
