The Mazarin Stone is a great yellow Crown diamond, stolen and recovered inside one evening of pure theatre. Holmes, watched and threatened in his own rooms, sets the trap with props: a wax dummy of himself at the window, and a gramophone playing his violin next door to persuade the thieves he is safely occupied elsewhere.
The thief who pockets his own arrest
Believing Holmes absorbed in his fiddle, the thief slips the diamond from his pocket into what he thinks is a safe hand — Holmes's own — while talking himself neatly into custody. The bust and the record do the detecting; the whole case is a conjuring trick, and the stone is back in the Crown's keeping by curtain.
