A criminal exchange, not a gang

Moriarty's genius is organisational. He sits motionless at the centre of his web like a spider, and it has a thousand radiations, and he knows well every quiver of each of them. He does little himself: he plans, he insulates, he funds through respectable hands. If an agent is caught, bail and defence appear at once — but the thread upward is never traced. For years, even Watson had never heard the name.

The one sweep that broke it

Holmes spends months quietly gathering the whole organisation into a single net, timed to close on a Monday. It very nearly costs him his life first — three attempts in a week — but the net holds: the entire gang is taken by the Yard on the evidence Holmes prepared, save two. The Professor slips it to follow Holmes to Switzerland; the Colonel remains at large for three more years.

The template for every mastermind since

Moriarty appears in person in a single story and casts his shadow over the whole canon. His model — the untouchable planner insulated by layers of expendable agents — is the ancestor of every criminal mastermind in the century of fiction that followed.
