Holmes keeps his tobacco in the toe of a Persian slipper on the mantelpiece — one of the small, indelible details that make 221B feel lived-in. It sits in a gallery of eccentricity: cigars in the coal-scuttle, unanswered letters transfixed by a jack-knife to the very centre of the wooden mantel, and the chemical corner reeking of his latest experiment.
