The vendetta that crosses oceans
The Red Circle is a Neapolitan brotherhood of blood and extortion — a descendant of the old Carbonari — whose reach follows Italian emigrants to New York and then to London. Join once, and you leave only by death. Its shadow drives an ordinary lodging-house mystery into a transatlantic feud, complete with candle-flash signals across a courtyard and a killer on the fire-escape.
A case solved by a flickering window
Holmes reads the danger from a lodger's habits and a candle blinking a coded warning across a light-well — flashes counted into letters, spelling danger and a name. Behind the small domestic puzzle stands a whole society's machinery of terror, and an American Pinkerton agent already hunting it.
