Holmes leaves London for bees on the Sussex Downs, refusing dazzling fees to come back. The cases thereafter are his own tellings, a jellyfish murder, and one last favour to the nation.
The great mind lays down its work
Around 1903 Holmes retires from detection altogether and moves to a small farm on the Sussex Downs, trading the criminal world of London for the ordered commonwealth of the beehive. He refuses even glittering fees to return — the work is done, and the age that made him is passing.
A quieter kind of case
Retirement does not quite silence him. He writes his beekeeping handbook, narrates one or two of his own late adventures, and solves the eerie death by 'the lion's mane' entirely from a half-remembered book — proof that the stocked mind outlasts the running legs. The Downs give the canon its autumn: the detective at rest, but never quite off duty.
