The second half of The Valley of Fear leaves England for the American coal country and the Scowrers — Lodge 341 of an ancient fraternal order twisted into a protection racket that rules the Vermissa Valley by beating, arson, and murder. Its boss McGinty runs the town from a saloon; its members mark victims and collect on fear; and no honest man dares testify.
The man who spent years inside
The lodge is destroyed from within by the Pinkerton operative Birdy Edwards, who infiltrates it under a false name, wins its trust, gathers the evidence, and springs the trap that sends the whole lodge to the gallows. It is one of Conan Doyle's studies of the real American secret societies of the era — and the reason Edwards, years later and an ocean away, is still hiding when Moriarty's reach finds him.
