Summary & analysis
A masked client of obvious rank calls at Baker Street; Holmes strips the mask verbally — the King of Bohemia — and the problem is a photograph held by Irene Adler, the one document that can wreck a royal marriage.
Holmes goes twice in disguise: a drunken groom to gather stable gossip, then a wounded clergyman carried into Adler's sitting room while Watson throws a smoke-rocket through the window. The fire alarm is an experiment in psychology — a woman runs to what she most values, and Adler's glance betrays the recess where the photograph hides.
Returning next morning to collect the prize, Holmes finds the house empty, a mocking letter, and a portrait: Adler saw through the clergyman, tested the deduction in male dress on his own doorstep, and left England holding the photograph as protection only. The story ends with the fee Holmes requests — her picture.

The story that set the template
The first short story is where the formula crystallises: a client with a delicate problem, Holmes\'s dazzling opening deductions on Watson, an ingenious plan, and a twist. Doyle discovered here that the short form suited Holmes far better than the novel — no need for a padding flashback, just a single brilliant problem turned over in an afternoon. Nearly every later story is a variation on the shape this one first cut.
A defeat that humanises him
Crucially, Doyle opens the run of short stories not with a triumph but a loss. Irene Adler out-thinks Holmes completely, and he keeps her photograph as a memento of the one person who beat him.
