Summary & analysis
Scott Eccles wakes as a houseguest to find his host and the entire household fled in the night; a grotesque voodoo relic and a watching face turn a social snub into a case, and a murder soon follows.
Two threads braid: a country constable's competent legwork and Holmes's reading of the abandoned lodge — the meal interrupted, the note that lured a guest to provide an alibi, the signals to a confederate. The 'invitation' to Eccles was manufactured to witness an innocent evening.
The household were hunters, not victims: exiles stalking a deposed Central American tyrant, Don Murillo the Tiger of San Pedro, hiding under an English name. The plot is vengeance a generation in the making, and the guest was set-dressing for an alibi.

Doyle lets the mystery run wide and international, and the tone shifts between the eerie and the political. It rewards atmosphere over the tight construction of the classic cases.
Holmes and the Yard, again
The story pairs Holmes with the shrewd Inspector Baynes, a rare provincial officer who impresses him by reasoning independently and correctly. It is a small tribute to the professionals the canon usually outshines, and a reminder that Doyle\'s later work grew more generous toward the police.
