The King of Bohemia hires Holmes to retrieve a photograph; Irene Adler out-thinks, out-disguises, and out-classes him. From that day he keeps her portrait and never again trusts an easy assumption about women — or about winning.

The night Holmes lost
Hired by the King of Bohemia to recover a photograph that could wreck a royal marriage, Holmes deploys the full arsenal — two disguises, a staged street brawl, a false fire alarm to make Irene Adler betray her hiding place. It works perfectly; and it is not enough. Adler sees through the clergyman, tests her suspicion by wishing him goodnight in male evening dress on his own doorstep, and is out of England with the photograph before he returns to collect it.
A defeat that changes him
She never uses the photograph as a weapon — she keeps it only as protection, and leaves the most gracious victory note in the canon. Holmes asks for her portrait in place of his fee and never again jokes lightly about the wits of women, or about the certainty of winning. One story; and she becomes, forever, THE woman.
