Summary & analysis
A wandering spinster with a fortune in old jewels drops out of her friends' correspondence; Holmes, unable to leave London, sends Watson abroad to trace her — and Watson, characteristically, muddles the trail and warns the quarry.
A sinister bearded 'missionary' and his wife shadow the lady across the Continent; Holmes joins late, reads a pawned pendant and an oversized coffin ordered for a small dead woman, and understands the plan with hours to spare.
The Shlessingers — really the criminal 'Holy Peters' and his mate — mean to bury Lady Frances alive beneath a legitimate corpse, hiding one body under another. Holmes tears open the coffin at the last second; the double-burial trick is defeated by a coffin too large for its stated occupant.

The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax is a pursuit story with a genuinely frightening climax: a lone woman travelling with her jewels, tracked by predators, nearly buried alive in an oversized coffin ordered to hold two. Doyle builds real dread from the vulnerability of a solitary traveller, and the graveside rescue is one of the canon\'s tensest finishes.
Holmes fallible again
The detective mishandles the early stages — sending Watson ahead and misreading the danger — and nearly arrives too late, a recurring humbling in the later canon. The villain\'s scheme, hiding a living victim beneath a legitimate corpse, is a memorably grim piece of ingenuity.
