The Adventure of the Dying Detective summary & analysis
Mrs Hudson fetches Watson in terror: Holmes is dying of a rare Asiatic fever, three days without food, forbidding his doctor friend to examine or treat him — a horror of a chapter in which the reader half-believes the great mind is failing.
The illness is a performance and Watson the unwitting prop: hidden, he must witness Holmes lure Culverton Smith — planter and amateur of tropical disease — into gloating over the ivory box that infected Smith's own nephew and now, supposedly, Holmes.
Smith, urged to 'confess' to a dying man who cannot repeat it, admits the murder — and Holmes, gaunt with belladonna and beeswax rather than plague, rises to arrest him. The whole sickbed was a stage set to make a careful poisoner careless.

Holmes as his own bait
The Dying Detective is a bravura performance piece: Holmes starves and paints himself into apparent mortal illness to lure a poisoner into a confession, deceiving even Watson to make the act convincing. Doyle lets the detective risk his dignity and his friend\'s anguish for the sake of the trap, and the reveal that it was all theatre is delivered with relish.
Cruelty answered in kind
The villain\'s weapon — a spring-loaded ivory box carrying a lethal contagion — is one of the canon\'s nastier devices, and the story\'s satisfaction lies in turning the poisoner\'s own method back on him through sheer nerve. It is a small, sharp study in Holmes\'s willingness to suffer for a result.
