Summary & analysis
Banker Alexander Holder accepted the beryl coronet — a national treasure — as security, took it home, and woke to find his son Arthur holding it, twisted, three stones gone. Arthur will not speak; Holder wants his gems, and believes he wants justice.
Snow is the record-keeper: Holmes reads the yard and lane for a barefoot track over boots, a wooden-legged watcher, and a scuffle at the window; indoors he tests how much force a coronet needs — more than silence, and the snap would wake a house.
Arthur saw his cousin Mary pass the coronet to blackguard George Burnwell and wrestled it back, breaking a corner; his silence protects her flight. Holmes buys the missing stones back from the fence and lets Holder learn what his niece was and his son is.

Snow as an honest witness
The Beryl Coronet is a satisfying trace-evidence puzzle in which fresh snow records the night\'s traffic — bare feet over boots, a waiting watcher, a struggle at the window — and clears the son whom every circumstance had condemned. Doyle uses the weather as an incorruptible ledger, and Holmes reads it to overturn a father\'s certainty about his own child.
The nobility of silence
Beneath the mechanics is a small tragedy of misplaced trust: a son takes the blame to shield a woman unworthy of it. The story belongs to the canon\'s recurring interest in people who suffer in silence for love, and in a detective whose job is partly to give their silence a voice.
