Summary & analysis

The opening

Holmes tells Watson his first case, from university days: his friend Trevor's bluff father staggered by a visiting sailor's insolence, and later felled outright — by a note about fly-paper and hen-pheasants that reads as gibberish.

The investigation

The cipher yields to position: every third word carries the message — 'the game is up, Hudson has told all, fly for your life.' The dead man's confession supplies the rest: the Gloria Scott, a convict ship, a mutiny, and a survivor living under a bought name.

The resolution

Old Trevor's respectability was built on a transported forger's escape; Hudson the seaman had lived on the secret for years. The story is structured as an origin: a don's chance remark that observation could be a profession sets Holmes on his life's work.

Deeper reading

The first case

The Gloria Scott is precious as origin: Holmes\'s earliest investigation, from his university days, told in his own voice. Doyle uses it to show the method before the career — a young man whose casual, accurate reading of a friend\'s father proves so unsettling that it plants the idea detection could be a profession. It is the canon quietly narrating its own genesis.

A concealment cipher and a buried past

The puzzle is a hidden message — every third word carries the meaning — married to a confession of transportation, mutiny, and a respectable life built on a false name. The pattern of a decent present undermined by a criminal past recurs throughout the canon; here it appears at the very root of Holmes\'s vocation.
