The Musgrave Ritual

Another early case from the tin box: Reginald Musgrave's butler Brunton, too clever for service, is caught rifling the family's ancient catechism — the Musgrave Ritual — and vanishes days after his dismissal, followed by the housemaid who loved him.
Holmes treats the ritual as an instrument, not an heirloom: oak and elm, sun positions, and paced steps are trigonometry with a felled tree solved from old measurements. The trail ends at a flagstoned cellar under the house, a cloth-wrapped mass of rusted metal — and Brunton, sealed under the slab he needed a partner to hold.
The rusted lumps are the ancient crown of the Stuarts, held by the family since a king's flight; Brunton solved a treasure map generations of Musgraves recited as nonsense, and the jilted Rachel let the stone fall — or watched it fall. The ritual's answers were always coordinates.

The Musgrave Ritual is one of the canon\'s most admired stories, and rightly: a family\'s meaningless-seeming ritual is revealed as a coded set of surveying instructions leading to the lost crown of the Stuarts. Doyle fuses the treasure-map adventure with pure spatial reasoning — shadows, paces, a felled tree recovered by arithmetic — into something more elegant than either alone.
