Summary & analysis
Two ministers of state bring the gravest case: a letter whose publication could mean war has vanished from a despatch box in a locked bedroom, and only a handful of people knew it existed.
Holmes reasons from access and then from a bloodstain: a murdered international agent, a society lady with a secret, and a rug whose stain does not line up with the floorboard beneath it — proof the rug was moved, and something hidden in the cavity below.
The minister's own wife took the letter to buy back an indiscreet note of her own; Holmes recovers it from the floor cache and slips it back into the despatch box, letting the statesman 'find' it and never know his wife's hand. Discretion outranks disclosure once more.
