Young Willoughby Smith, secretary to a bedridden scholar, dies in the study whispering 'the professor — it was she', a pair of golden pince-nez clutched in his hand and no woman anywhere in the house.
Holmes reads the glasses like a face: the strong prescription, the wide nose-clips, the elegant frames describe a refined, very short-sighted woman who cannot see a yard without them — and therefore, blind and trapped after the killing, must still be inside the house she could not flee.
She is hidden behind the bookcase in the invalid's own room — his estranged wife, a Russian revolutionary who came for documents to free a prisoner and stabbed the secretary in panic. She takes poison, entrusting her cause to Holmes; the pince-nez alone had proved a blind stranger present.

The Golden Pince-Nez centres on a bravura deduction: Holmes reads the owner of a dropped pair of spectacles — her looks, her habits, her very manner — from the lenses alone, then proves she never left the room. Doyle delights in the object-as-witness, and the hidden woman behind the bookcase is a satisfying, humane reveal.

The story\'s roots reach into Russian revolutionary politics and old betrayals, giving a domestic murder an unexpectedly tragic and international dimension. It is one of the more atmospheric Returns, and its sympathy ultimately lies with the intruder rather than the dead man.
