Cambridge's indispensable rugby three-quarter, Godfrey Staunton, vanishes the night before the varsity match after a note turns him white; his frantic captain and a sinister specialist in the background bring Holmes a very human disappearance.
A torn telegram and a cold trail send Holmes to a drag-hound: Pompey, borrowed to follow an aniseed scent laid by the doctor's carriage, leads across country to a lonely cottage. The chase is literal tracking by dog, echoing Toby of the early days.
There is no crime — only grief: Staunton's secret wife lies dead of consumption in the cottage, and the specialist is her physician. Holmes withdraws in silence, one of the canon's tender endings, the great engine of deduction halted at a private sorrow.

The Missing Three-Quarter uses a comic premise — a rugby star vanishing before the big match — to arrive at genuine grief, as the trail leads not to sport-fixing but to a dying young wife kept secret. Doyle again lets a light setup deepen into sorrow, and Holmes\'s intrusion into private pain leaves him, unusually, apologetic.
The dog on the trail
The detection turns on a drag-hound following an aniseed trail, another of the canon\'s uses of scent where reason cannot reach. It is minor Holmes, but tender, and a reminder that not every mystery hides a crime — sometimes only a sorrow someone tried to keep.
