On the eve of a scholarship examination, a tutor finds his proof-sheets have been disturbed in a locked room; three students had access, and the honour of all hangs on discretion before the paper is sat.
The room reads like a small crime scene: pencil shavings and a broken pencil-point, a scratch and a smear of dark clay on the desk and the bedroom, and a torn strip. Heights matter — only a tall man could have glimpsed the papers over the transom — and clay comes from the long-jump pit.
Gilchrist, the athlete, copied the paper on impulse and was betrayed by the jumping-pit clay from his spiked shoes; his servant-accomplice's clumsiness left the shavings. He confesses and withdraws, choosing a commission in the Rhodesian Police over dishonour — Holmes closes it without a single official word.

A crime without the police
The Three Students is a small, closed puzzle of academic honour — a leaked examination paper, three suspects, and no wish for scandal. Doyle keeps the stakes low and the reasoning tight: pencil shavings, a scratch, and the differing heights of three men narrow the field to the one who could have jumped. It is a pure logic exercise in miniature.
Mercy over exposure
As so often, Holmes resolves it privately, allowing the guilty student a chance to redeem himself rather than destroying his future. The story belongs to the canon\'s gentler mode, where the detective\'s discretion serves reform rather than punishment, and the machinery of law is never invoked at all.
