The Adventure of the Priory School

Summary & analysis
The Duke of Holdernesse's young son vanishes from an elite school along with a German master; the headmaster arrives at Baker Street near collapse, and a colossal reward hangs over a trail already cold on the moor.
Holmes reads the moor's ground with a cartographer's patience: bicycle tracks, then cow tracks that walk with a strange gait — horseshoes forged to print like cloven hooves. The false spoor leads to the Fighting Cock inn and the dead master, and the geography accuses someone close to the family.
The boy was taken by the Duke's own illegitimate son, Wilder, to extort the estate; the German master died discovering it. Holmes reads the whole conspiracy, extracts the child, and — controversially — accepts the Duke's cheque and silence, letting rank buy discretion.

Tracks that lie
The Priory School is a superb piece of trace-reading built on a deception in the ground itself: cattle tracks that could not have been made by cattle, because cow-hooves do not gallop. Doyle hides the answer in plain sight and lets Holmes recover it from the mud — the shoes forged to print like hoofmarks are one of the canon\'s cleverest physical tricks.
Rank and its rot
Beneath the kidnapping is a study of aristocratic corruption — a duke\'s secret, a hushed scandal, a fortune offered to bury the truth. Holmes takes the cheque and makes his disapproval plain. The story is among the longer, richer Returns, with a genuine moral edge under the ingenuity.
