Summary & analysis
Violet Smith, a music teacher, is shadowed each weekend on a lonely stretch of road by a bearded man on a bicycle who keeps his distance and vanishes when pursued; her wealthy new employers are oddly insistent she stay.
Holmes has Watson reconnoitre and then works it himself: the cyclist keeps a chaperone's distance, not a predator's; the real danger is the household that engineered her employment, and a sudden proposal of marriage from a servant reveals a scheme aimed at an inheritance she does not know she has.
Racing to the moor, Holmes finds a forced wedding already performed at gunpoint by the villain Woodley and a corrupt clergyman; he breaks it as invalid, and the mysterious cyclist proves a protector, not a threat. The pursuit misread the roles — the follower was the guardian.

Menace on a country road
The Solitary Cyclist trades the drawing room for the open air — a young music teacher shadowed on her weekly ride — and builds real unease from the ordinary. Doyle is again drawn to the isolation of the countryside, where a woman can be watched, waylaid, and nearly forced into a fraudulent marriage with no help within call.
Holmes late, Watson useful
The detective misreads the urgency and arrives almost too late, with the rescue coming at a gallop and a gunpoint. It is a lesser story structurally, but a good example of the canon\'s villainy of respectability — the predator here is a gentleman, and the danger domestic rather than criminal in the usual sense.
